Nicole Ari Parker, an American actress who has appeared in film and television and in stage productions, is known for portraying Teri Joseph, a fiery attorney featured in Showtime's Soul Food. After her wedding the actress is now known as Nikki Kodjoe. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland she showed an aptitude for acting in her childhood and received a Best Actress award in an Maryland high-school competition. Born in Mumbai, India and raised in Nigeria until the age of seven, Contractor was well-versed in world travels and a variety of cultures at a very young age. She attended boarding schools from the age of 7 to 9 in London. Then her family moved back home to Toronto (Canada) in Canada, where she spent her entire childhood. Contractor trained and eventually became a classical dancer in Toronto. She attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto, a school of the arts focused on theatre and dance. Contractor decided to take acting more seriously at the age of 16 following almost 10 year of dance. Following her graduation from high school Contractor accepted a scholarship at the University of Toronto to pursue the dual field of sociology and psychology. In addition, she obtained a master's degree in Theater. After one semester at the University, Contractor went to an audition on a call-to-action basis for the show Pericles at the world-class famous, world-class Stratford Shakespeare Festival [Ontario, Canada and got the lead role. In 2002, Canadian theater critics were awed by her performance during 92 performances of Pericles. The opportunity was presented to her to enroll in the Stratford Conservatory. The school accepts only eight men and four women to study the art of classical theatre. Contractor was eager to accept.
